UCT AIRU team joins Mi-Hy consortium meeting in Paris

UCT joined the Mi-Hy (Microbial Hydroponics) consortium in March 2026 with the Adaptive and Cognitive Systems Lab (ACSL)  in the Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (AIRU) which is led by Prof. Deshen Moodley, contributing to the project’s modelling, AI and digital integration.

Mi-Hy is a Horizon Europe project exploring how microbial fuel cells, hydroponics, microbial processes and digital technologies can be integrated for sustainable nutrient recovery, plant cultivation and bioelectrical applications.

In September, Prof. Deshen Moodley, Dr Henok Moges and PhD student Jack Montgomery represented UCT at the annual Mi-Hy consortium meeting in Paris. Hosted by Sony CSL Paris, with sessions at Hangar Y in Meudon, the meeting brought together partners from KU Leuven, the University of Southampton, UWE Bristol, CSIC, Biofaction, the University of Novi Sad and UCT to review progress and plan the next phase of the project Linkedin.

During the meeting, the UCT team worked with partners to refine the integrated physical and digital system and its modelling, building on ACSL’s work in dynamical systems, neural-network modelling and scientific machine learning including future directions in PINNs and STGNNs.
